Akaka Lauds Repeal of Don't Ask Don't Tell

Statement

Date: Sept. 20, 2011
Location: Washington, DC

U.S. Senator Daniel K. Akaka (D-Hawaii) issued the following statement on today's repeal of the U.S. military's "Don't Ask Don't Tell" policy.

"Today is a historic day for our military and for our nation. The Don't Ask Don't Tell policy, which prevented brave members of our armed services from openly expressing their true identity, is finished. Never again will sexual orientation prevent service in our military.

"The well-being of our troops is incredibly important to me and I was pleased to see the results of a Pentagon study last year showing that a majority of our troops are prepared to serve with openly gay members.

"This repeal is a major step toward ensuring equal rights for all Americans. Our nation and our military will be stronger because of it."
